Organic
waste amounts to 30 - 50 % of all household waste. Within
a few years, organic waste may be banned from landfills in British Columbia.
The
following pages present first results of a pilot project initiated by
The Fraser Valley Regional District together with the District of Kent
to compost source-separated organic waste. In
this project, organic household waste was collected separately from other
garbage in order to produce high quality compost.
Thirty-six residents and five
elementary school classes in the District of Kent enthusiastically participated
in the project.
Composting
of organic waste will play an important role in an ecologically and economically
sustainable waste management of the near future. It is no surprise that
the project has sparked the interest of many communities and we welcomed
visitors from neighboring communities and the Fraser Valley Regional District.
We
acknowledge the generous donation of vented kitchen containers and of
biodegradable bags by Biobag
Canada Inc. and of biodegradable bags by Ecosafe.
