On collection day, green bins are placed at the curb.

Inside the green bins, the organic waste is contained in biodegradable bags.

Organic waste is collected weekly. For this project, waste is weighed to obtain data on waste quantities for future planning.

The organic waste is placed together with the bio-degradable bags into a mixer....

...and blended with other material of organic origin. For this project, 180 kg of organic household waste are mixed with 180 kg wood shavings, 630 kg of biosolids and 180 kg of bulking agent.

The organic material blended and ready for composting. During the mixing process, the bags are opened by the auger inside the mixer.

.

Four composting vessels (one for each week of the pilot project) were custom-made for this project.

Good aeration is a prerequisite for the production of pathogen-free and odorless high-quality compost. All of the composting vessels contain perforated pipes that are connected to an air blower.
.

After placing the composting material in the bins, it is covered with a top layer of screened compost overs that serve as odor barrier.

Composting vessels are covered with a tarpaulin for protection

.Within 24 hrs after placing the compost material into the bins, temperature rose to more than 55 degree Celsius - enough to kill most pathogens.
With 18 % oxygen in the composting material we are maintaining aerobic composting conditions
Ideal conditions result in a 'steaming'
composting process.

After five weeks of composting, most of the biodegradable biobags are completely decomposed.

NOTE: In the meantime, Ecosafe has introduced a new biodegradable bag. We compared this new bag with the Biobag bags. To find out more, please click here.

Vented catcher and biodegradable bags were donated for this project by Biobag Canada Inc.   Biodegradable bags were donated by Ecosafe   Green bins were purchased from Norseman Plastics
