Insulated Rotary Drum Composter

Prototype Rotary Drum Composter built in 2001.  This Drum was 4 feet in diameter and 12 feet long.

The Project:

Transform Compost Systems together with the Alberta Research Council, and Coil Manufacturing designed this large Rotary Drum Composter.   The Drum is 10ft in Diameter and 35 feet long.

The Rotary Drum is designed as a continuous feed, taking raw waste in one end and discharging at the other.  The material composts for  3-5 days in the insulated drum achieving 55 - 60 oC.  Odours are collected and biofiltered.

The drum provides a solution to odourous wastes.  After the composting step in the Rotary Drum the odours generated  are greatly reduced and pathogen reduction has been achieved.

This Drum, along with a smaller prototype Transform built,  is now being used for research at the Waste Management Centre in Edmonton.
